It often seems the things that divide us, the differences that pull us apart, are more important than those that bring us together. The more we focus on those disparities the wider they appear.
But now, more than ever, we need to find the common ground which unites those opposing sides. Bridgers are motivated to build connections between what at first seem far-flung places.
This is a challenge. Bridgers are intrinsically impartial. From their vantage point, they can see both points of view and their primary focus is on where those views can meet. They look beyond the first layer of impressions. Where others see entrenchment, they see connections. They don’t make arguments for one side, they clear the way for understanding.
The world needs Bridgers and it is increasingly rare to find them. Our societies frequently seek to divide us into groups, our own separate tribes, accentuating our preferences, leading to polarization and often an intolerance for other views. This leaves our horizons diminished and our interactions poorer.
Bridgers shorten the distances between. Why go around? It’s exhausting. Bridgers can convince both sides of the enormous advantages in establishing a direct and dynamic connection and, once the link is made, collaboration becomes a way of life, enriching both sides.
We need to recover this ability. We need to embrace it, not just in business but in every field of our lives. It is a core requirement socially, professionally politically, and personally. Leaders have a special responsibility to build these bridges to allow every one of us to make our contribution. This is the mission. Think about it. Play your part!
