A Netflix documentary has stirred the world's conscience. For that reason alone, it deserves our attention and reflection. We can all discuss the accuracy of the numbers, question its content but we must recognize that it has already sparked a huge global debate on the oceans and their sustainability. Seaspiracy is already generating impact, changing the landscape, creating Legacy.
Ali Tabrizi's personal story and the road to legacy are remarkable. His passion for the sea and influence from Jacques Cousteau's and Sylvia Earle's distinct legacy led him to contribute to the clean-up "plastic beaches movement". This candid goal led him to a much powerful achievement: create a documentary, in which he exposed himself and took the risk by telling a story while uncovering some interesting information.
Tabrizi's actions, decisions, and objectives uncloak his solid Purpose: to raise awareness towards society's selfish actions on managing precious resources.
The controversial Netflix-supported documentary raised concerns about the consumerism topic and triggered an unprecedented debate. The industry is reacting and seeking to overturn the documentary narrative but the question we face as global citizens is: where does the truth lie? There is no credible and trustworthy global institution we can rely on. There is a lack of global leadership alignment that is deeply affecting our world. So, what do we know for sure?
Seaspiracy is an excellent case of Leadership Design where Purpose and Legacy are core elements.
Firstly, our world's abrupt development is simultaneously fascinating and dangerous.
Secondly, most of us belong to a generation that allowed this undesirable outcome but fortunately, more and more people are committed to Purposes like these.
Lastly, we may not be able to confirm the veracity of the facts but one thing we know for sure: the only way to increase resources will be finding a way to preserve the ones we already have. David Attenborough mentioned a "simple" solution: implement Marine Protected Areas or Ocean Natural Reserves, interdicted to the fishing activity, which would ultimately preserve the sea's ecosystem and allow these areas to naturally recover. Will it work? The only way to know for sure is to try.
Overall, no matter where you stand on the subject, the undeniable truth is this: Seaspiracy is an excellent case of Leadership Design where Purpose and Legacy are core elements. The perfect recipe to inspire and impact.
